Does Your Air Conditioner Need Service?
With the weather getting warmer, many homeowners are turning their attention to their air conditioning units. However, there is a lot that is misunderstood about them as well as the importance of air conditioner services to keep them running efficiently. Luckily, HVAC technicians are here to help, and have provided an FAQ to help shed some light on one of the most important parts of the home in the summer.
All About Air Conditioner Parts
Before learning how air conditioners work and all about air conditioner services, it is important to start with learning all about their basic, essential parts.
An air conditioner unit is made of 5 main AC parts.
- Refrigerant - AKA coolant, the lifeblood of the air conditioning system.
- Compressor - Pressurizes the refrigerant and raises its temperature.
- Condenser Coils - Located in the outdoor AC unit, they receive the refrigerant from the compressor.
- Expansion valve - Removes pressure from the liquid refrigerant.
- Evaporator coil - Where the home’s heat is picked up.
How Does an Air Conditioner Work?
Next, in order to be able to tell if air conditioner services are warranted, it’s important to know exactly how those parts all work together. Essentially, the main point of an air conditioner is to take warm air and transfer it outside of the home, followed by cooling off the air inside of the home as well.
But how exactly does it do that?
The process starts with the compressor. The compressor takes the refrigerant and condenses it before circulating it through the outdoor portion of the air conditioner unit. This changes the refrigerant from a gas into a liquid.
After the refrigerant is in its liquid state, it’s forced through the unit’s cooling compartment or indoor evaporator coils. It is then circulated past the evaporator fins by the fan, which turns the refrigerant from its new liquid state into a vapor and pulls the heat out of the surrounding air.
As the heat is pulled out, the newly cooled air then goes back into the home. As the air enters the home, the refrigerant is turned from a vapor back into a liquid which removes any remaining heat. Before leaving the evaporator, the refrigerant is cool and low pressure.
It then enters back into the condenser and starts its journey all over again. Every part of the process is equally important, which is why air conditioner services meant to keep every part of it running smoothly are necessary.
Why Professional Air Conditioner Services Are Important
The air conditioner really is an important part of the home. It does more than just cool down the home, it also maintains the humidity level and air quality as well.
That is part of why seeking professional air conditioner services is so essential, but it is also exactly why no homeowner should attempt any repairs on their own.
There are simply just too many working parts on an air conditioner unit to attempt a DIY home repair. HVAC tradesmen have the experience, training, and skill to perform air conditioner services correctly at the right time.
